Although our time following NRL is still young I am sure there has still been many moments over the passed decade or so of heart break that will stick in our minds forever (particularly me, following Souths).
For me of course there are the obvious moments such as learning that Souths were to be kicked out of the competition. On the game side of things however, lately I have been thinking about a particular moment.
In 2003 Souths were considered the worst team and heading into a new season I had my usual optimism about the outcome. After a valiant loss to the Bulldogs, playing the Broncos in the second game wasn't exactly what we wanted. To the crowds delight and amazement we played a good game and lead with seconds to go, with possession, looking like achieving the impossible and setting up a much improved season. Dad and I in the stands were celebrating. Then what was probably the most heart breaking sporting moment of my life happened when Gordon Tallis managed to strip the ball one on one off Souths which led to a Broncos break away try. We lost the game 22-20 after the siren and there was nothing but despair. We went on to only win 3 games that year, but lost many of ours games by a very small margin. One can only think what could have happened had we held on to that game against the Broncos.
Once again Souths are the worst team in the comp and this weekend we come up against the Broncos, which is what got me thinking about that game. I decided that I would rather Souths get flogged than have another loss in the dieing stages again.
