He's not one of the greatest captains, he's a good captain but South Africa is a better side than England and that's why England get dominated by South Africa.

I have no doubts he is a good captain, he is also a very good player.
I couldn't rank him up with any greats however. I remember him making captaincy mistakes now and again, and you don't hear people raving about the brilliance and influence of him. He has some big tasks ahead of him, an upset against us would help.

he's smart, sorry, i meant to say one of the great modern captains*
he targets and studies the big players from the opposition and takes them out

Steve Waugh IMO is the greatest modern captain and I dont think that Smith is on the same level as Waugh

Yeah, I agree.
Trust me, I am sure that the captains of all the nations have their plans for opposition players - whether they are the big names or even lesser known.
It then comes down to the skill of the captain and his bowlers to carry these plans out. When it all comes down to it I think the key in this is the bowlers, cause no matter what the captain plans out if the bowlers haven't got the skill to follow the plan, it is useless. I think is it more the decisions that are unplanned, that are made during the game depending on what is happening, that decide how good a captain is in this aspect.

but take vaughan when they won the ashes,
he gave his bowlers the plans and set those fields (i.e. the hayden field),
sri lanka's bowling attack wouldn't be half as potent without jayawardene setting the awesome fields to murali and mendis

I still don't think that he has proven himself as a great captain. He's always had a top 3 side to utilise and they have never struggled.

He's a good captain. Not amazing, but above average.
